About Josie
Through compassion, empathy, and evidence-based practices, I offer a safe space where you can explore your innermost thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment, and in confidence.
I have always enjoyed science and using research evidence in an applied way as a clinical practitioner, seeing theory become meaningful and beneficial in the ‘real world’.
Being a Counselling Psychologist means that I get to listen to amazing stories from all sorts of different and incredible people. In return I can offer insights, challenges, teaching, and support, based on all the best knowledge and a wealth of experience.
I offer psychological therapy to individuals, couples and groups. I am a specialist in eating disorders, self-harm and suicide, domestic abuse and adolescent mental health, as well as psychedelic-integration psychotherapy. Alongside being well-versed in several different modalities of therapy (including humanistic models, CBT, DBT and ACT), I am trauma-informed, a trained mindfulness teacher and have published 2 books on mindfulness.
I am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC (health and care professionals council). I am also a member of the Institute of Psychedelic Therapy https://instituteofpsychedelic...
My work is underpinned by Buddhist philosophy, ethics, and practices. I have practiced Buddhist meditation for nearly 40 years of my life and am a trained and very experienced mindfulness teacher having taught mindfulness in prisons, in-patient units and in the corporate sector.
Together we will co-create a unique space, safely held with compassion, empathy, and non-judgement. In this way, at your own pace, your story, your truth, and your own experience can be witnessed, and accepted. Acknowledging the past, you can then begin to review and re-frame outmoded beliefs, challenge unhelpful behaviours and develop new skills. Throughout the process I will assist you to find greater psychological resilience, flexibility, insight, and compassion to help you to live a life that is more rewarding, and full of possibilities.
As a client of mine you will typically be spending only 1 of your 168 hours of the week in therapy. This means it must really count, so I will give you the skills and understanding that you need to make progress outside the therapy room, as well as within it. This may entail homework, such as mindfulness practices, or specific activities such as recording thoughts or trying new behaviours, as well as taking time outside of sessions to reflect, practice new skills and to take committed actions (but always at your own discretion and pace).
This integration of approaches is developed from many years of training and experience working with people of all different backgrounds, including high-risk individuals convicted of violent crimes, refugees fleeing torture and war, survivors of domestic abuse, primary school children at risk of neglect, severely mentally ill adolescents and corporate high-flyers in London’s financial district. All my interventions are evidence-based and informed by the latest research and my commitment to continuing professional development.
Choosing online therapy is easy, convenient, comfortable, and has been found to be equally as effective as in-person therapy according to numerous studies 1 2 3 However, if you prefer to meet in-person then I also offer session to individuals and couple at my consulting rooms in Devon.
