Psychedelic Integration
The Future's Bright - The Future's Psychedelic
And sometimes that is really disorienting! If you have used psychedelics, regardless of where, how and when, and would like support integrating your experience, then you have come to the right place.
Like many other psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health professionals, I am excited about the ‘psychedelic renaissance’, and the advances in clinical research indicating many psychological benefits to using psychedelics under carefully managed conditions. Although still illegal in the UK and many parts of the world - psychedelics are now being widely recognised as having a high degree of therapeutic value, especially regarding depression, addictions and PTSD. Many individuals decide to use psychedelics as a way to address really deep-rooted issues that traditional talking therapies can sometimes seem to struggle to reach or address.
For most this can bring a renewed perspective on stuck or habitual patterns, increase feelings of connectedness, well-being and sense of purpose in life; but for others this is not the case. You may have participated in a clinical trial or you may have tried a retreat or individual sitting, or even a recreational experience that has left you feeling disappointed, confused or even disturbed in some way, even if you have had a 'positive' trip. If that is the case it can be daunting and challenging to find someone to speak with who has a balanced, non-judgemental and informed understanding of psychedelics.
Psychedelic integration
Psychedelic integration therapy involves the process of incorporating and making sense of experiences that occur during psychedelic sessions; be those in clinical trials, retreats and ceremonies, or recreational settings. Through the integration of these experiences, you can reflect on insights, emotions, and realisations gained from the use of psychedelic substances. This form of therapy is considered essential in maximising the benefits and long-term effects of psychedelic experiences, regardless of whether the trip itself was positive or negative.
I can also help those of you who may be less experienced, or returning to further psychedelic work, to prepare for your journey so that you have all the information, understanding and support to get the most from it before and/or after the experience.

Following the use of psychedelics there is a particular window of at least 6 weeks where the brain is more receptive to new experiences, perspectives and behaviours. This is sometimes referred to as increased 'neuroplasticity'. The above image is from a 2014 study by Petri et al. comparing the neurological connections in a brain using a placebo (on the right) compared with using psilocybin https://doi.org/10.1098/rsif.2014.0873
This can be an excellent time to engage with some specialist therapy in order to help enhance the benefits of this effect. However, regardless of whether your psychedelic experience was many years ago, only a few weeks ago, or even yet to come, it can sometimes be helpful to talk to someone who understands psychedelics, is non-judgemental and recognises ways to help turn even a very challenging or unpleasant 'trip' into gold.
Stages to expect:
- Preparation: Before undergoing any psychedelic experience, proper preparation is essential. Integration therapy typically helps you prepare mentally, emotionally, and practically for your psychedelic journey. This may involve discussing intentions, addressing fears or anxieties, and ways to manage intensity or overwhelm during a 'trip'.
- Psychedelic Experience: During the psychedelic experience itself, you may undergo profound insights, emotions, and perceptions. I do not participate in the actual psychedelic sessions, but provide guidance and support beforehand and afterward. It is strongly suggested that you follow legal guidelines and seek reputable support for this stage.
- Post-Experience Integration: After the psychedelic experience, integration therapy becomes crucial. You may feel overwhelmed, confused, or even ecstatic about your experiences. Integration therapy can help you process and make meaning of these experiences and help you 'ground' and stabilise again with your new perspectives.
- Exploration of Insights: Integration therapy involves exploring the insights, emotions, and revelations that emerged during the psychedelic journey. Therapy can help you understand the significance of these experiences, how they relate to your life, relationships, and personal growth.
- Emotional Support: Psychedelic experiences can be intense and emotionally charged. Integration therapy offers a safe and non-judgmental space for you to express your feelings, fears, and uncertainties.
- Behavioural Changes: Integration therapy may involve discussing behavioural changes or adjustments based on insights gained from the psychedelic experience. Therapy help you identify actionable steps to integrate these insights into daily life.
- Integration into Daily Life: The ultimate goal of integration therapy is to help to weave the psychedelic experiences into your ongoing life journey. This may involve changes in mindset, perspective, behaviour, relationships, or life goals.
- Long-Term Support: Integration therapy is often not a one-time event but a process that unfolds over time. You may wish to receive ongoing support as you continue navigate life's challenges.
Overall, psychedelic integration therapy is a holistic approach aimed at maximising the benefits of psychedelic experiences while minimising potential risks. It combines psychological support, emotional processing, and practical guidance to help you to harness the transformative potential of these experiences for personal growth and healing.
